SPOILERS ALERT. The following post is a full retelling of Gnomeo and Juliet in 3D. It contains every major plot point and the ending. If you haven’t seen the movie yet and want to be surprised, don’t read this.
“She feigns her death. He finds her, thinks her dead. Takes his own life. She wakes, finds him dead. Takes her life. Both dead.” says the statue of William Shakespeare.
“What kind of an ending is that?” asks Gnomeo
This movie is based on the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet.
It happens on Verona Drive, where two rival gardens stand side by side. Our main characters, Gnomeo and Juliet, are ceramic garden gnomes divided by color and loyalty. Gnomeo is from the Blue Garden, while Juliet comes from the Red Garden.
The tension between the two rival gardens is clear from the start. Gnomeo competes against Tybalt in a heated lawnmower race. The lawnmowers are nearly colliding. Just as Gnomeo was about to win, Tybalt threw a metal pipe, causing Gnomeo to crash and lose the race.
On the other hand, Juliet tries to convince her father that she is not as delicate as he believes. The only way she would be taken seriously is by getting the Cupid’s Arrow orchid. By doing this, she will prove to her father that he is wrong about what he thinks.
It is payback time. Gnomeo is dressed to infiltrate the Red Garden, while Juliet is preparing to go to the greenhouse to take the life-changing orchid.
Gnomeo saw Benny spraying paint at Tybalt’s well. He tried to get Benny’s attention, but Benny accidentally threw the spray paint, triggering the laser security system. They are caught red-handed.
They both tried to run away, but Gnomeo let go of the nozzle to save Benny. He and Tybalt started fighting again, and they only stopped when the house owner turned on the bedroom lights. Gnomeo quickly escapes using the underpants as a parachute.
When Gnomeo fell on the greenhouse, he saw a silhouette of someone running. He was star-struck that he started following the running shadow.
Gnomeo got the flower first, but this mysterious gnome is not ready to give up. She claims that the flower is hers since she saw it first. But to Gnomeo’s defense, he touched the flower first. It became a game of tug. No one was willing to give up the flower, but it came to an end when they both fell into the pond.
They both realize that he is Blue and she is Red. Juliet runs away from Gnomeo, and he tries to run after Juliet, but Tybalt is at the gate looking for Gnomeo.
When Juliet arrives at her tower, she tells what happened to Nanette, her frog friend. Nanette told her that it is a doomed love story. And all of a sudden, Gnomeo appears, confessing his love to Juliet. But it was cut short because Juliet’s father arrived. They decided to meet tomorrow at the same place at 11:45.
When they were at the greenhouse, they met a plastic flamingo, Featherstone, that had been stuck for 20 years. The flamingo has a very sad love story. He might not be smart, but he knows what love is. The three of them decided to meet the next day again.
When Gnomeo returned, he saw his mother crying. The Red gnomes ruined the most beautiful thing that the Blues have.
The blue gnomes asked Gnomeo to terminate the Reds. They decided that they would spray weedkillers on the Red’s garden, but Juliet saw Gnomeo. He aborted the mission. Gnomeo chose love over revenge.
Gnomeo tried to explain the situation to Juliet, and he proposed that they should just stay at the old Laurence place. But Benny saw them. Before Gnomeo could explain, Benny ran away.
Unfortunately, Tybalt was waiting at the alley after seeing Benny holding a weedkiller gun. He jokes that he will smash Benny using the lawnmower. When Benny tried to cross the alley, Tybalt attacked him and chopped off Benny’s hat using a trowel.
This angered Gnomeo. This leads to a fight with Tybalt on the lawnmower.
When Gnomeo warned Tybalt about the wall, he did not listen. He thought it was an old trick, so Gnomeo could gain the upper hand. Sadly, Tybalt crashed into that wall.
The Red gnomes got very angry. They turned the alley into a battlefield between the two rival colors. Gnomeo was pushed to the middle of the street with passing cars, and he could not move. Everybody thought he died when they heard another smashing sound and saw the broken blue ceramics. The silence was deafening. The Blues and Juliet mourned the death of Gnomeo.
Everybody went back to their gardens except Shroom. He saw Gnomeo on the other side of the road, but was taken by a dog that ran away. Shroom went to Featherstone for help.
Lord Redbrick decided to keep Juliet safe by gluing her feet. Nanette could not console her friend because she decided it was better to leave her alone.
Benny planned to avenge Gnomeo with the help of the Bunnies. He went inside the blue house to buy the Terrafirminator, a very powerful lawnmower that will surely kill every last Red.
Shroom and Featherstone went looking for Gnomeo while Benny started the war. The Terrafirminator ruined the wall that separated the Red and the Blue garden. It smashed and ruined everything that is on the way. While the gnomes started attacking each other.
Shroom and Featherstone found Gnomeo, and Shroom told him that Juliet is in danger.
The Terrafirminator became too hard to control, and it also attacked the Blue Garden.
Gnomeo arrived and tried to save Juliet from the Terrafirminator’s complete destruction, but her feet are glued. She tells him to go but he refuses. He hugs Juliet tightly instead.
The war left both gardens in shambles. The tower crumbled, and Gnomeo and Juliet are nowhere to be found. Their parents assumed they died from the last attack caused by the Terrafirminator.
Lady Bluebird and Lord Redbrick are consumed by guilt. They realized it was time to end their feud. In that moment, Lord Redbrick steps on a broken switch, triggering the remaining tower to shake. And beneath the ruins, their star-crossed lovers are safe.
I don’t know about you, but I think this ending is so much better.
