Inside the quiet hat shop, Sophie is working on decorating a hat. The stillness of the room is broken when one of the shop girls knocks on the door to tell Sophie that they have closed the shop and that she has done enough work. The girl invites Sophie to go out with them, but Sophie declines and tells her she will finish decorating the hat.

As the girls turn to leave, one of them lets out a shout, pointing toward the mountains. Through the window, the dark, jagged shape of Howl’s Moving Castle appears through the mist.

While looking through the window, they begin to gossip. The rumor is that Howl tore a girl’s heart out. One girl says that she is now too scared to go out, but another laughs it off and reminds them that he only preys on pretty girls.

After leaving the shop, Sophie boards a train. She steps off and begins walking through a quiet, narrow alley, but her path is suddenly blocked by two soldiers.

Suddenly, a hand rests gently on Sophie’s shoulder. A man appears behind her and calls Sophie “sweetheart.” He tells her that he has been looking for her everywhere.

The soldiers tell him that they are busy, so he makes the two soldiers leave by controlling them using a simple flick of his finger.

The stranger turns to Sophie and asks where she is headed. She says she is going to the bakery.

The stranger warns her that he is being followed, and they must act normally.

As they walk, an inky blob wearing hats begins to appear everywhere. The man apologizes to Sophie for involving her in his troubles. Before Sophie can react, they pick up their speed, and suddenly they are walking on air, gliding high above the bustling streets and colorful flags of the city.

Sophie tells the lady at the front door that the shop is already closed, but the woman still steps inside. She looks at the hats and insults both the shop and Sophie. Sophie asks her to leave and opens the door.

Sophie is shocked to know that the woman in her shop is the Witch of the Waste. The witch casts a spell on Sophie that prevents her from telling anyone about it. Before Sophie can react, the Witch mentions Howl and leaves the hat shop.

Sophie looks at her hands, now gnarly and aged. When she touches her face, she feels that something there has changed, too. She goes to the mirror, and she cannot believe it is really her. She paces back and forth, convincing herself to stay calm and not panic. She tells herself that it is just a bad dream.

When Sophie’s mother arrives at the hat shop, she goes to Sophie’s work area, but she does not find her there. One of the girls tells her that Sophie has not come downstairs yet today. Her mother then goes upstairs and knocks on Sophie’s door. Sophie tells her mother that she has a bad cold and doesn’t want her to catch it. Her mother replies that she sounded like a 90-year-old woman.

Sophie realizes that she can’t stay in the hat shop for long.

The turnip-head scarecrow comes back. This time, Howl’s castle is behind him. The castle sounds mechanical, like there is an engine, and it is blowing air every second. It looks like a machine with four legs. The scarecrow shows Sophie the entrance of the castle.

Once inside the castle, Sophie goes directly to the fireplace to warm herself. She adds wood to the fireplace. The castle looks like a dump of junk, and there are cobwebs, like it had never been cleaned before.

Inside the castle, there is the extremely powerful fire demon named Calcifer. Sophie tells Calcifer that he should be able to break Sophie’s curse. But Calcifer tells Sophie that if she can break his curse, he will help Sophie break hers.

Calcifer tells Sophie that if she can figure out how to break his connection with Howl, then it is easy for him to break Sophie’s curse. Sophie makes a deal. Calcifer makes a bargain.

In the morning, there is a knock on the door that wakens Sophie, and there is a boy that goes downstairs. It opens to Porthaven. The dial changes color to blue. The dial has four colors, and depending on the color, the location changes.

The boy is wearing a disguise when meeting the guest. He is practicing magic.

Calcifer only obeys Howl.

Sophie introduces herself as a cleaning lady and says she just started work today. Howl asks who hired her, and she answers that it is Calcifer because he was disgusted with how dirty it is in the castle.

Howl asks what is hidden in Sophie’s pocket, and it is a red paper with a symbol that burns and leaves scorch marks on the table. Howl erases the mark using the palm of his hand.

Howl arrives at the castle looking like a human bird. Calcifer warns Howl that if he keeps flying like that, soon he won’t be able to turn back into a human. Howl goes to see Sophie, and he sees Sophie’s real face.

Sophie and Markl go to the town to buy groceries, and when they are at the port, Sophie sees the henchmen of the Witch of the Waste.

There is a sudden scream and crying, and there is Howl with bright orange hair because Sophie ruined his magic potions in the bathroom. Howl is so mad.

Howl’s color changes to black. Howl thinks that there is no point in living if you can’t be beautiful. There is a sudden shadow that appears, calling the spirits of darkness, and there is green slime coming from Howl’s body.

Sophie gets mad and tells Howl that if he thinks he has it bad when she has never once been beautiful in her entire life. She goes outside and starts crying loudly, and the scarecrow offers an umbrella. After she releases her emotions, she goes back and drags Howl to the bathroom and tells Markl to clean up Howl.

When Sophie enters the palace grounds, a dog follows her, thinking that it is Howl in disguise.

Sophie meets the Witch of the Waste again. The witch is also going to the palace.

Sophie tells the Witch of the Waste that she will go to the palace for job hunting because she is sick of working for Howl, while the witch received a royal invitation.

The witch tells Sophie that she can only cast spells and not break them.

The Witch of the Waste has to walk because vehicles and her henchmen are prohibited, so they have to walk along the stairs. The Witch of the Waste waited 50 years to be invited to the palace.

The witch and Sophie are guided to a room, and there is one chair. The Witch of the Waste immediately sits on the chair, while Sophie follows the dog into another room. Suddenly, there is a flashing light that blinds the witch, and she is surrounded by human-like shadows.

The King’s head sorceress.

The dog is Heen. His errand is to escort Sophie. Sophie tells Suliman that Howl is lazy and that the King might find him completely useless.

Suliman describes Howl as a gifted student. She says that Howl has been using his magic for selfish reasons, and if he stays selfish, he might turn like the Witch of the Waste. His power is too great for one without a heart.

“Send her in.” The Witch turns into an old woman, her original age, and all her powers are gone.

If Howl reports to Suliman and promises to use his magic to serve the kingdom, Suliman will help him break the curse. If not, she will strip him of all his powers, just like what she did to the Witch of the Waste.

Sophie says that it is a trap. Suliman lured witches and wizards with an invitation from the King and then stripped them of their power. Sophie defends Howl—he might be selfish and cowardly, but he only wants freedom, and he can fix his own problems. While she is saying this, her face slowly turns back to her young face.

Suliman says that Sophie is in love with Howl. Madam Suliman says that she now knows What Howl’s weakness is.

Howl arrives disguised as the King.

They are going to leave, but Suliman prevents them by making waves and submerging them in water. Howl says, “Don’t look down,” and Suliman says that she will show his mother what he is really like.

Starlights appear everywhere, bursting, and they are surrounded by human-like shadows. The starlights and Howl transform into a bird—a human bird—and they escape.

Howl, Sophie, Grandmother, and Heen escape from the palace.

Howl tells everyone that they are moving. Madam Suliman is hot on their trail, so they have to hurry.

Howl starts making the symbols, and they move to a place that is familiar to Sophie. It looks like her old house and the hat shop. There is also the sound of the train and the green mountains.

Howl adds some features because their family is growing. He also adds a new color to the dial, creating a new portal that brings them to Howl’s secret garden.

It is Howl’s secret hideaway. His uncle gave it to him so he could study, but now Sophie can come here whenever she likes.

Suliman’s henchmen are looking everywhere for their new place, but Calcifer keeps the house well hidden. Many people are moving to a new place.

Sophie’s mother arrive.

They hug, and her mother is crying. Her mother marries again to a nice and filthy rich man, and they can live together.

Sophie no longer needs to work as a cleaning lady, but Sophie says that she likes living there.

Her mother leaves something, and the old witch takes the bag. Inside, there is a peeping bug—Suliman’s henchman. It looks like an inky blob worm, and the old witch feeds it to Calcifer.

It turns out that Sophie’s mother is working for Suliman.

Markl asks Sophie if she also wants to leave.

Calcifer is not producing any fire, only smoke. Sophie asks Markl to open the window. The old witch advises them not to open it because Calcifer is too weak to protect their house.

A battleship starts dropping bombs. Suliman’s henchmen find them and begin entering the house. A bomb drops toward their house, but luckily, winged Howl is able to control it.

Suliman’s henchmen enter through a tiny hole.

Howl asks the old witch if the cigar came from Suliman, and the old witch says that Howl is no longer running away.

Howl instructs Sophie that they should stay inside, and Calcifer will protect them while he stands guard out front.

Sophie tells Howl that they should run instead, but Howl says that he has had enough of running away. He now has something he wants to protect.

Sophie sees that Howl is in trouble.

Sophie asks Calcifer to move the portals, but Calcifer can’t do it without Howl’s help. If they don’t break away, Howl will keep protecting the hat shop. Sophie prefers Howl as a coward.

If they won’t move, Howl doesn’t have a chance.

If Sophie takes out Calcifer, the castle will collapse, so if they are going, Sophie needs to make sure that Calcifer is the last to leave.

Sophie gives her hair to Calcifer so Calcifer can move the castle and take them to Howl.

For that, Calcifer needs something from Sophie, and that is why Calcifer takes some of Sophie’s long hair.

Then Calcifer tries to build or lift the castle and move all the junk. It looks like the castle is vomiting all the junk Howl collected, and now the castle looks small.

The old witch figures out that the demon has Howl’s heart, and she takes it while Sophie and Markl are busy looking at the sky.

She takes it, and the castle collapses again, but it is too hot, and Sophie throws a bucket of water. Calcifer becomes a small fire, and it makes him too weak, so the castle is torn in half.

Sophie cries, realizing what she has done and that she might have killed Howl. But the ring starts emitting light again, and Heen barks at Sophie to let her know. The charmed ring is moving and still emitting light, and it is pointing toward the front door.

It is dark. In that place, Sophie sees Howl’s secret hideout where he studied. The ring points outside, and there she sees the young Howl.

Many starlights are dropping into the lake. The young Howl catches one of the starlights, starts talking to it, and eats it. Then there is his heart covered in fire, and the spell is broken.

Sophie calls Howl and Calcifer. She tells them that she knows how to help them

“Find me in the future.”

When they come back, there is Howl in front of the door. He is now a winged Howl, and Sophie asks him to bring her to Calcifer. Howl flies her and Heen.

The castle is still moving, but it is only the floorboard left, and the old witch is still holding Howl’s heart. Howl turns into a human again. Sophie goes to Grandma and asks for Howl’s heart.

Calcifer is tired. Sophie gives back Howl’s heart to him.

Calcifer is still there, and Howl is alive, but the last piece of the castle collapses and falls from the cliff. Luckily, the Turnip Head saves them by using his stick as a step, and they fall between two rocks.

Sophie kisses the Turnip Head, and he turns out to be a prince of a neighboring kingdom.

But his true love is in love with someone
