These are the five words we are going to learn today.

altruistic

adjective

It describes someone who helps others without expecting anything in return. It means being selfless and caring about others more than yourself.

Examples:

  1. Many people loved him because of his altruistic actions.
  2. Helping someone without expecting a reward is an altruistic act.

awry

/əˈraɪ/

adjective

Awry means something has gone wrong or is not as expected. It can also mean something is not in the right position.

Examples:

  1. Our plans went awry because he arrived late.
  2. His tie was awry after rushing to the meeting.

charade

/ʃəˈreɪd/

noun

Charade has two main meanings:

  1. A game – A word-guessing game where people act out a word or phrase without speaking.

  2. A false or deceptive act – Something that is pretended or faked to hide the truth.

Examples:

  1. We played charades at the party and it was so fun.
  2. He tried to keep up the charade that he was from a rich family.

clandestine

 /klænˈdes.tɪn/

adjective

Clandestine means something that is done in secret or hidden, usually because it is illegal or not allowed.

Examples:

  1. They held a clandestine meeting late at night to discuss their secret plans.
  2. The spies exchanged information in a clandestine manner to avoid being caught.

coincidence

 /koʊˈɪn.sɪ.dəns/

noun

A coincidence is when two or more events happen at the same time by chance, without being planned or connected. It’s not caused by anything intentional—just a random occurrence!

Examples:

  1. I met my teacher at the airport—what a strange coincidence!
  2. Is it just a coincidence that we keep running into each other?
